Paint It Quaintly: How to Paint Your Room's Wall Plate
One thing that can create an immediate impact in a room
is a fresh coat of paint. But sometimes, a minimal change is enough to do the
trick. Why not start with your switchboard? It's a feature that's often
unnoticed, but you interact with it almost every day. Others opt to have these
wall plates replaced with something more interesting. But another option is to
paint it. It's a money-saving choice, and all you have to do is follow some
easy steps.
Preparation
Choose your project. Your room is an option but remember
to keep the windows open to let fresh air in. Take a cardboard box and cut one
side open; this will serve as your working station and will keep spills from
your floor or desk.
A common mistake most make is to leave the switch cover
in place and paint it on the wall. You should remove it so you won't get paint
in the switch mechanism or on the wall. Next, sand the cover with 220-grit
sandpaper. This de-glosses and etches the surface, enabling the primer to
adhere better. Finally, wash the plate with soap and water; then, let it dry
completely.
Tip: If you aren’t painting
the screws, place them in a plastic bag, so you don’t lose them. If you are,
push them into an extra piece of cardboard to hold them and protect the threads
from being coated.
Primer
Shake the can well and test it to see how the product
comes out. New nozzles sputter and need a few sprays before working on the
project. Hold the canister 8 to 10 inches away from the electrical wall plates,
and spray them until they're completely coated. For a smooth and even cover,
move the can back and forth while applying the primer.
Don't spray too close and too much. Several thin coats
are more ideal than a single thick stroke. After application, allow the primer
to dry. When it's dried, check the coverage. Spray another coat if necessary.
Tip: If you want a perfect
finish, sanding the plate between the primer and first coat of paint is recommended.
Using the same sandpaper, focus on getting rid of any bubbles or bumps.
Paint
Using a nice paintbrush, completely cover the switch
plate with the color of your choice. Do this with long strokes, all in the same
direction; let the paint dry. If you're not satisfied, you can always go for
another coat.
Designs are also recommended to accompany a plain color.
Using an artist paintbrush, you can draw any pattern you’d life. Try the moon
and sun to indicate the "off" and "on" of the switch.
Tip: When you're done,
finish with a clear varnish, and let it dry for at least a day. This will act
as a sealant so that the paint will last a long time. Also, be extra careful
when mounting the switchboard back as you won't want to scratch it with the
screwdriver.
Follow these simple steps and those wall plates will be the centerpiece of your room. Remember to work in a
well-ventilated place and to wear a mask, eyewear, and gloves to protect your
nose, hands, and eyes.
